The Best Plus Size Bras For Older Women (That Actually Lift!)

The older you get, the less patience you have for imperfect bras. More often than not, you’ll end up forcing yourself to compromise on one thing or another, especially if you’re a plus-sized woman like me. Either you get full coverage but no comfort, great support but a terrible closure, or a soft, simple design with virtually no lift.

That lack of lift is one of the biggest problems I’ve been tackling lately, especially since I’m getting older, and a larger bust size also seems to mean sagging happens earlier than you’d expect.

That doesn’t mean I’m ready to torture myself with an annoyingly stiff bra packed with wires and padding, though. I still want something I don’t hate wearing, I just expect a certain amount of shaping to be part of the package.

With that in mind, I compared six of the best plus size bras for older women, including traditional full coverage bras, wireless styles and easier front closing designs. Some were far better than I expected. A couple reminded me exactly why I started looking in the first place.

What Should the Best Plus Size Bras for Older Women Actually Do?

Finding a bra that actually comes in your size is just the first hurdle for women like us. We need comfort that lasts more than the first ten minutes, support that lifts without assigning the full job of shaping your breasts to your shoulders, and a design that’s easy to get on and off.

For a fuller bust, especially when breast tissue has softened with age, I’m looking for a few very specific things:

  • A band that stays where I put it. If it starts climbing my back, I know I’ll spend the rest of the day tugging it down.
  • Cups with some shape. I like light molding because it gives softer breasts somewhere to sit. Thick push up padding feels like overkill.
  • Proper separation and side support. I want my breasts facing roughly forward rather than drifting towards my armpits or getting squashed together.
  • Straps that spread the weight. Thin straps and a heavy bust are a miserable combination.
  • A closure I can actually use. With arthritis, this is a big thing for me. A front closure sounds wonderful until you discover six tiny hooks that require perfect finger control.

I also sit down before deciding whether I like a bra. Seriously. Bands behave very differently once you’re seated, particularly on a plus size body.

6 of The Best Plus Size Bras for Older Women

I ranked these from worst to best, even though, realistically, I’d recommend all of them to the right person, in the right circumstances. Obviously, lift shaped a lot of my decision on how to order this list, but I wanted a good blend of comfort and simplicity, too.

6.PoseFree Wireless Coverage Bra

★★☆☆☆

older women bra

Pros:

  • Soft, seamless cups
  • Wireless
  • Smooth under clothes
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • Vague sizing
  • Back fastening
  • Limited lift
  • Band can creep upwards

I understand why the PoseFree Wireless Coverage Bra is appealing to women looking for the best plus sized bras at an older age. It looks sleek, there’s no wire digging into your ribs, and the molded cups disappear nicely underneath a T shirt. For the price, I was pleasantly surprised when I first put it on.

The lift is gentle. On me, perhaps a little too gentle. My biggest problem was the sizing. Bras sold as large or extra large always make me nervous when there’s a fuller bust involved. Two women can wear the same dress size and need completely different cup depths. I followed the chart, yet I still felt caught between slightly too snug and not quite supported enough.

After longer wear, the band also started creeping upwards. Once that happened, I lost even more lift at the front and found myself adjusting it. Then there’s the back clasp, which is tricky enough for me to manage at the best of times, even worse when my arthritis flares up.

5. ThirdLove 24/7 Classic Perfect Coverage Bra

★★★½☆

great bra for plus size older women

Pros:

  • Full coverage memory foam cups
  • Wide memory foam straps
  • Good lift and separation
  • Double layer smoothing back
  • Flexible underwire

Cons:

  • Rear hook and eye closure
  • Underwire won't suit everyone
  • Takes more effort to put on
  • Pricier than some everyday options

This is the sort of bra that reminds me why underwire has survived for so long. The ThirdLove 24/7 Classic Perfect Coverage gives a fuller bust real shape. Its memory foam cups mold around the breasts, the wide straps are much kinder than the skinny ones I usually end up hating, and the double layer back helps smooth things out under clothes. ThirdLove uses a flexible underwire rather than rigid wireless construction here.

I really like the separation. Softer breasts have a habit of gathering in the middle when a bra doesn't give them much direction, and this one does a far better job than most plus-sized bras for older women of keeping everything where I want it.

My problem is getting into it. The closure is at the back, which means reaching around and fiddling with hooks again. The wire also loses points for me. It gives excellent structure, but I don't always want that pressure against my ribs for a full day. If ease of dressing isn't an issue for you, I'd rate this much more highly.

4. Glamorise MagicLift Front Closure Support Bra

★★★★☆

older women bra no sag

Pros:

  • Bands from 38 to 58
  • Cups extending to I in many band sizes
  • Wireless MagicLift support
  • Wide cushioned straps
  • Front fastening

Cons:

  • Several small hooks to fasten
  • Quite a substantial bra
  • Cup seams can show through thin tops
  • Less soft than the bras higher up my list

Glamorise understands bigger breasts. The MagicLift Front Closure Support Bra comes in bands from 38 to 58, with cup options reaching I across much of the range. Its crisscrossed support system and inner bust band are designed to lift without wire, while the wide padded straps take some of the pressure off your shoulders.

I like how secure it feels. There’s plenty of coverage, and this is one of the better choices here if your priority is keeping a heavy bust properly contained with a decent amount of structure, rather than relying on stretchy fabric and optimism.

The front closure sounded perfect for me until I looked at what “front closure” actually meant. Glamorise uses multiple hook and eye fasteners, with the number increasing by size. That's easier on my shoulders because I don't have to reach behind myself, but my fingers still have work to do.

The seamed lace cups can also show beneath thinner clothing, too. I’d choose it over a back fastening support bra on a difficult shoulder day. On a poor dexterity day, I’d want an easier clasp.

3. SKIMS Fits Everybody T Shirt Bra

★★★★☆

good bra for older women plus size

Pros:

  • Soft, stretchy fabric
  • Lightly lined molded cups
  • Wide side wings for smoothing
  • Strong everyday support

Cons:

  • Rear hook and eye closure
  • Uses underwire
  • Demi coverage may feel skimpy on very soft breasts
  • Awkward to fasten

I expected to be rather cynical about the SKIMS Fits Everybody T Shirt Bra. I wasn’t. It gives me one of the nicest shapes of anything on this list.

The cups are lightly lined, the sides are wide enough to smooth things out, and SKIMS uses 360 stretch fabric, which I appreciate when my body seems to change shape between breakfast and dinner. The bra comes in bands up to 46, although cup availability varies by band.

Overall, this is one of the better plus sized bras for older women if you don’t mind a traditional bra style. Unfortunately, traditional bras have become a bit of a problem for me. There are a lot of things I dislike, such as the annoying underwire, and the regular fastening (hook and eye closure) at the back.

I’d still wear this under a fitted top without hesitation. It looks genuinely good. I just wish getting into it required less cooperation from my body.

2. Liberare Smooth On T Shirt Bra

★★★★½☆

best bra for older women plus size front closure

Pros:

  • Lightly lined foam cups give proper shape
  • Wireless lift and separation
  • HeroHold magnetic front closure
  • Wide front adjustable straps
  • Seamless smoothing wings
  • Can convert to racerback

Cons:

  • More substantial than a soft comfort bra

This is where Liberare started to make much more sense to me as a plus-size woman. The Smooth On T Shirt Bra is designed specifically for larger busts, with built in lightly lined foam cups that give me considerably more shape than a stretchy wireless bra. There’s actual separation too, which I appreciate. My breasts look like two breasts under a T shirt rather than one soft mound in the middle.

The sides are another strong point. Liberare uses seamless wings for smoothing and extra support, plus wide elastic and straps that adjust from the front.

The HeroHold magnetic closure handles the everyday fastening at the front too, so I’m not twisting around every morning. There is a hook and eye adjuster at the back, but I see that more as something I’d set for fit and leave alone rather than wrestle with every time I put the bra on. The optional racerback hook is useful too, especially when I want the straps kept firmly off my shoulders.

My reservation is bulk. This feels like a proper supportive bra, which I like, but I wouldn’t pick it for lounging. For going out, fitted tops and days when I want my fuller bust properly lifted, it’s excellent.

1. Liberare All-Day Contour Bra

★★★★★

best bra for older women front closure full bust

Pros:

  • Lightly-lined contour cups
  • Wireless lift and separation
  • Easy-on Magnetic front closure
  • Smoothing side panels
  • Adjustable fabric straps
  • Soft modal rich fabric

Cons:

  • Current sizing is a bit limited

The All Day Contour gives me noticeably more shape than most of the other plus sized bras for older women I tried, because the cups have proper contouring. That matters with softer breasts. Mine don’t naturally fill the top of a cup the way they once did, so a little structure gives them somewhere sensible to sit without burying me in padding.

I also get better separation. My bust looks more balanced under a T-shirt, and the smoothing sides help stop everything wandering towards my armpits by lunchtime. Liberare does all of that without underwire.

The HeroHold magnetic front closure is still the feature my hands appreciate most. I can fasten it in front of me, and I don’t need perfect finger control to line everything up.

My only real complaint is sizing. The current range is narrower than a few of the other Liberare bras available, including the Smooth-on T-shirt bra, so I’d check the chart carefully before ordering.

Quick Tips for Choosing the Right Plus Size Bra as You Get Older

I’ve wasted plenty of money on plus-size bras that didn’t come close to meeting expectations. These tips should help you dodge a few of the same mistakes.

  • Start with the band. It should stay level when you move. If it climbs up your back, tightening the straps usually makes the whole thing more annoying.
  • Forget the cup letter on its own. A DD cup changes volume with the band size. Two women wearing DD bras can need very different support.
  • Use the brand’s own size chart. This matters even more with bras sold as L, XL or XXL. Those labels are nowhere near universal.
  • Sit down in it. I do this every time now. A wide band can feel perfect standing up and start folding into your stomach the second you sit.
  • Reach above your head and lean forward. I want to know whether the band moves and whether my breasts stay inside the cups before I remove the tags.
  • Think about the closure properly. Front opening bras for seniors sound easier, but several tiny hooks can still be a nuisance when your fingers are stiff or clumsy.

You Don’t Need Different Breasts, Just a Better Bra

I used to think I had two choices: wear something supportive and spend the day feeling poked and restricted, or choose comfort and accept that gravity was getting most of what it wanted.

Thankfully, bras have got better.

The Liberare Smooth-On T-shirt bra would be my pick for larger breasts in general, and more structure. For lift, comfort, and style I’d choose the All Day Contour. The shaped cups make a visible difference to my fuller, softer breasts, and I get proper separation without wires or a fiddly back fastening.

I’m not chasing the chest I had decades ago. I quite like the body I have now. I simply want a bra that supports it properly, looks good under my clothes and doesn’t make getting dressed feel like the first difficult task of the day. If you want the same, now at least you know where to start.
