I don’t really like to complain, but I think we can all agree that shopping for any kind of clothing for plus-sized women isn’t exactly easy. Everyone says they’re “inclusive” these days, but finding your size in most stores hasn’t gotten any simpler. It’s even harder with bras. Like most companies haven’t even considered that band sizes might need to go above 38.

As I started getting older (I’m in my fifties now), I started changing what I looked for in bras, too. That just made it worse. As soon as I switched to plus-size front closure bras, I felt like I was constantly trying to dodge a minefield of bras that never stayed closed, or did, and managed to squeeze my bust into one weird oblong shape.

What I Look For in the Best Plus-Size Front Closure Bras

I think the mistake I made at the start was assuming this was a simple swap. Move the clasp to the front, make life easier, done. That’s not really what happens.

Once you start trying different plus-size bras, you realize how much work the back of a bra is actually doing. The band, the adjustability, the way everything sits once it’s fastened. When you take that structure and shift things forward, something always seems to get lost.

Support is usually the first thing to go, or at least proper support. I don’t mean “it holds everything in place.” A lot of bras do that. I mean lift. Separation. That feeling that everything is sitting where it should be, not just contained. Most front-closure options still give you that “uniboob” effect.

Closures don’t help either. A surprising number of front closure bras for older women still use rows of tiny hooks. More hooks than I’ve seen on some back-clasp bras, which feels like missing the point entirely. So, what I look for is usually pretty simple:

• A secure and simple closure: Something that’s easy to fasten, but actually stays closed. No flimsy Velcro, and no huge rows of hook-and-eye clasps.
• Genuine support: I do want a bit of separation and lift, even if I’m not looking for an amazing cleavage.
• Great straps: The thicker, the better. Also, they need to be adjustable, or I’ll never get the right fit.
• Decent coverage and a strong band: I don’t want a tiny strip of material, and I don’t want a band that rolls up all day.
• Comfort: Soft materials, breathable fabrics, and preferably no wires (without giving up on lift entirely).

The Best Plus-Size Front Closure Bras I’ve Tried

I actually didn’t expect to “rank” these bras when I bought them. I was just looking for one good option. I ended up with a handful. Some decent with serious flaws. Some excellent, but just better suited to different days and situations.

 

Glamorise MagicLift Front Closure Bra

★★★☆☆

Everyone talks about this one. It’s one of the first bras I saw when I looked for “best plus-size front-closure bra” on Google.

It sounds like exactly what you’d want. Full coverage, wide straps, posture support, no wires. It feels like it should be one of those reliable, everyday plus-size bras you can just depend on. The first time I put it on, I was quite happy with how “secure” it felt, even without wires.

What really got to me was the closure. It’s on the front of the bra, yes, but there are so many tiny fiddly hooks, I honestly dread getting it on. Once it’s on, it’s fine, and it does give you plenty of coverage, even a little lift. I will say that the fabric does feel a bit thick and scratchy in places, though, particularly after washing.

It’s not a bad option for plus-sized ladies. It’s just one of those bras I avoid more than I actually wear.

This one did feel a bit better than the first, just not by a huge margin. It definitely leans toward that “made for older women” look, which I don’t mind, depending on the bra.

Still, it’s straightforward, dependable, and quite affordable if you can grab it when a deal’s running on Amazon. The material is a bit softer than what you get from the Glamorise bra, too, which is good for me, since my skin is sensitive at the best of times.

I also really like how wide the straps are and how thick the band is. The two together make the bra feel a lot more supportive and help with shaping without wires. Again, the main problem is just the closure. It’s a hook-and-eye style again, and the hooks are really tiny.

The sizing threw me off a bit. I tried my usual size, and it felt tighter than it should have. Then I went up a size, and suddenly it felt like I’d gone too far the other way. I couldn’t quite land on one that felt right.

• More affordable than most options

Cons:

• Still a fiddly front closure

Forlest Samantha Front-Closure Bra

★★★☆☆

Forlest is a tricky brand for bras, because it does do both of the things I want: front closures, and larger band sizes. It just tends to offer them separately. There is one bra that handles both pretty well, the Samantha Bra, which is one of those “ultra-breathable” options designed for summer.

This one just didn’t quite work for me. The sizing threw me off straight away. It’s all things like “Large” and “Extra-large,” so you’re basically guessing and hoping it lands somewhere close. Mine didn’t.

The front closes with buttons, which I thought I’d prefer at first. They’re easier than hooks, I’ll give it that. But I never fully relaxed in it. I kept checking without really meaning to, just a quick glance down or adjusting slightly.

Buttons are definitely easier to manage than hooks when your hands are shaky, but I was always nervous about them popping open when I least expected them to. Eventually, I ended up wearing this bra around the house and switching to a more “secure” front-closure bra whenever I went out.

Liberare Everyday Easy-On Bra

★★★★½☆

I was convinced I was “onto something” with Liberare, so I tried their Everyday Easy-On bra next. It looks and feels a lot more secure than the Comfort Sculpt, but it still has that helpful magnetic front-closure I absolutely love.

I will say, I was surprised at how comfortable and supportive this bra managed to be at the same time. It’s not quite as “relaxed” as the Comfort Sculpt, but it still feels amazing to wear. I also love that you can adjust the shoulder straps from the front without twisting.

Although it still doesn’t give my bust a huge lift, it does make me feel like I can run, jump, and hop without anything spilling out. There’s also a handy “back adjuster” option you can use when you’re feeling a bit bloated, or your weight fluctuates, and you don’t want to buy a new bra.

Overall, this is my top pick for everyday wear, it’s just not the ultimate winner for plus-sized women in my mind; that prize goes to the next option.

Liberare Smooth-On T-Shirt Bra

If you don’t like a structured bra, stick with the Easy-On. If, on the other hand, you do like a bit more lift and shape, the Smooth-on T-shirt bra is the best by far. It was clearly made for plus-sized women, with band sizes up to 46, and complete coverage. There’s even extra fabric around the back and sides, so you don’t feel like anything is spilling over.

The lift is surprisingly good for a wireless bra. There are these molded cups that help to lift and separate your breasts without making you feel like you’re being forced into a specific shape.

The first time I wore it with a fitted top, I actually noticed the difference straight away. Not in a push-up, overdone way, just a cleaner shape. Everything sits slightly higher, slightly more separate. You don’t get that soft merging in the middle that happens with a lot of wireless styles.

Again, like the Comfort Sculpt and Easy-On, this one has a magnetic front-closure, which I definitely recommend trying if you haven’t already. Another bonus feature I like is the optional J-hook in the back, so you can convert it into a racerback style (for outfits that need that).

Pros:

• Noticeably better shape under clothes
• Holds everything in place without flattening
• Smooth sides make a difference you can actually see
• Still easy to put on, no effort

Cons:

• Slightly more structured than the everyday one
• Not the one I’d pick for lounging around at home

You Can Find a Plus-Size Front Closure Bra that Works

A few years ago, I would’ve picked one of these, worn it for a week, and told myself it was fine. That was usually enough for me. If it didn’t actively hurt, it stayed.
