As a former personal stylist at Macy's with nearly a decade of experience in the lingerie department, I can tell you that the number 1 question I got from women was this:
"Are there any good wireless bras for someone my age?"
I recently began asking this for myself. Now retired and in my 60's, I've come to the realization that it's time for my wardrobe to reflect my new season of life. And because I love fashion and helping folks find lingerie that makes them feel great, I wanted to share my own top picks here!
Quick Overview:
I will go into detail more about each below, but if you are short on time, here are my top picks for comfortable bras for senior women.
- Best Overall: The Comfort Sculpt Bra by Liberare
- Best for Posture: Power Correcting Bra by Forme
- Best for Big Busts The Smooth On T-Shirt Bra by Liberare
- Best for Smoothing: Easy Does It Bra by Warner's
- Best in Bralettes: The Bliss Bra by Harper Wild
What I Was Looking For:
Bras can be highly subjective as each woman has her own unique shape, lifestyle, and shape preferences so I also took some guidance on which bras to try from resources like Good Housekeeping and Oprah Daily. I made my judgements based on the following:
Best Overall: The Comfort Sculpt Bra by Liberare
- This adaptive bra brand (which was featured in Vogue) made it to my top choice for senior women for a couple of reasons. As it's title claims, this seamless full-coverage style sculpted nicley to my curves and the knitted rib panels provided a strategic everyday lift to my chest. Plus, I felt held in while moving and bending which is tough to find in wirefree bras.
- In addition, I find it increasingly difficult to reach behind my back as I age, so a front closure (which is magnetic) makes dressing quite a lot easier for me. I could see this bra working for many different women.
- Last, the fabric (a Modal blend) was incredibly soft and high quality, especially for a bra that costs about $50!
Best for Posture: Power Correcting Bra by Forme
- Like many other women, I spend a lit of time sitting at a keyboard. Thankfully, brands like Forme are tacking this issue with special bras that train your muscles over time and correct your posture. Friends had suggested I try them when I complained about my achy back.
- This certainly improved my posture, which was fantastic! However, a word of warning to my fellow 65+ ladies that this was a bit hard to wriggle into and is not adjustable, so check sizes carefully
- Obviously, if you're not used to good posture, it will take some time to get used to. Expect a bit of a workout on your shoulders and try easing into this with a few hours at a time.
Best for Big Busts The Smooth On T-Shirt Bra by Liberare
- My size can be difficult to find as a 44DD, so when I came across this full figure t-shirt bra that also had a front closure, adjustable bands and seamless wings, I was over the moon excited to try it.
- Like Liberare's other bras, this front clasp is also magnetic and very easy to put on. I've actually recommneded this bra to my sister-in-law as well, who struggles with arthritis in her hands and bought one of this brand's other bras.
- The construction is beautiful. The wings are seamless and smoothed me at the underarms. The cups are molded and lightly padded, which gave me a nice natural shape without too much bulk.
Best for Smoothing: Easy Does It Bra by Warner's
- Warner's is a classic for a reason: they have a bra for everyone. Thoughout my career, I've recommended hundreds of their bras, but my favorite from this brand is the smoothing bra. As an older woman with a large chest, the underarms are one of the most uncomformatble areas of a bra so the underarm smoothing was appreciated.
- The wide band and underarm smoothing compression held up over time. However, I will be completely honest that this didn't make my top due to the thin straps. These tend to dig in and I've had to add strap pads on my own dime.
- The fabric is a bit shiny due to the high spandex content, which didn't bother me but might irritate someone who is looking for a more natural look and feel.
Best in Bralettes: The Bliss Bra by Harper Wild
- Every once in a while I come across a bralette that is actually appropriate for someone my age and the Bliss Bra was no exception. With a sleek, everyday shape, this bra was perfect for lounging or sleeping in.
- I agree with Good Housekeeping's assesment. The fabric was very breathable and comfortable, however I had to pull it on overhead which as I've explained can be challenging for my limited mobility.
- This is offered in sizes XS-6XL, making it one of the most size-inclusive bras on this list. (However, I can't vouch for the 6XL fit. I ended up trying the 3X).
