When I heard about a bra designed by a 70-year-old woman, I just had to try it. I’m a woman in my 70s myself, and I know how tricky it can be to find a comfortable, easy-to-wear bra.

I have a 38DD bust, which means I’m constantly struggling to find wire-free bras that are actually supportive. Then, to make matters worse, I also suffer massively from rheumatoid arthritis. If you know the pain- you’ll know how difficult it can be to fiddle with those pesky bra clasps every day.

I figured if anyone knew how to design great bras for women over 70, it would be a member of the “crew”. So I decided to test this bra out for myself (and compare it to a few other adaptive bras for older ladies), to see how it really held up!

What I Wanted from a Bra Designed by a 70-Year-Old Woman

 

I know, all of us ladies are different – but we reach a certain age, we start prioritizing similar things, particularly when looking for the best bras for older women.

Here’s what I was hoping for, both with this bra, and the other two I tried out next:

·         Easy to Wear Design: This is an absolute must for me. I just can’t handle traditional clasps with my arthritic fingers, so I need something that’s easy to open and close. Ideally, I usually look for front-closing clasps too, since twisting to fasten a clip can be a challenge.

·         NO Wires!! My skin is pretty sensitive these days, and wires are a pinching, prodding nightmare I can do without. I still want support, but I want it from a comfortable, breathable, and wireless bra.

·         Wide Straps: Since I have quite a large bust (and I hate wires), I’m usually looking for support from other things, like wider straps, and lots of coverage around the back and sides of the bra. Wider straps help to stop my shoulders from aching too.

On top of those three things, anything else was a bonus.

My Review: The Bra Designed by a 70-Year-Old

If you’re not familiar with this particular bra yet, you can find it right here on Amazon. Straight away, it checked a few boxes for me. There are no wires (Thank goodness), the straps are definitely wide enough to distribute weight evenly across my shoulders (and deliver a little support). Plus, there’s a front closure with no annoying clips.

Add to that the fact that it cost less than $20 when I bought it, and you can probably see why I was excited. I thought I’d found my lingerie holy grail.

Unfortunately, when I actually tried this bra on, I found myself wondering whether it was actually designed by a grandmother – or a woman at all for that matter. On the surface it looks great, but all of the biggest “plus points” have glaring faults.

The bra is affordable, yes, but it also looks and feels cheap. The material is somehow thin, but not particularly breathable at the same time. The fit is a little off too – I had to guess at my size because the company doesn’t follow a standard sizing chart.

Then there’s the front closure. The buttons seem like they’d be easier to work than a clasp, but they’re incredibly hard to use. I was sat squeezing for what felt like hours. I’m sure this bra would work fine for some women, but for me, it was disappointing.

Fortunately, I did find some other bras that I love.

The Liberare Comfort Sculpt Bra: Much More Comfortable

Don’t get me wrong, the bra designed by a 70-year-old woman isn’t a nightmare to wear – but it’s not incredibly comfortable either. There are no wires, and wide straps, which is good, but the material isn’t very soft, and the fit is a headache.

If you want real comfort, I’d recommend the Liberare Comfort Sculpt instead. Now this is a bra that’s all about comfort. The butter-soft seamless material feels divine. Yous till get ultra-wide comfort straps, and there are now wires. Plus, it fits perfectly!

Even better, the front-closing clasp is pretty much a miracle. There are still clips, but there are also magnets that help to guide them together, so you can get dressed and undressed in seconds. There are even handy finger straps I can use when I’m having trouble with my shaky, unpredictable hands.

The Liberare Smooth-On T-Shirt Bra: More Supportive

The Liberare Comfort Sculpt bra addressed all the comfort issues I’d had with the bra designed by a 70-year-old woman, but I’ll admit, it doesn’t give you the most support. You don’t feel like your sagging or anything like that, but if you’re want a little extra lift, I’d say go for the Liberare Smooth-on T-Shirt bra instead.

This option still has the handy magnetic front-closure, and the ultra-soft material. It also gives you plenty of coverage on the back and sides (although the straps could be a little wider for me).

The best thing though is you get a little lift, even without wires. The molded cups lift, shape, support, and separate everything – perfect for a little confidence boost. I don’t wear this every day, but I always go back to it when I’m dressing up for something special.

The Liberare Everyday Easy-On Bra: Better for Everyday Wear

If you’re looking for something that offers a great balance between support and comfort, the Everyday Easy-On bra knocks the bra designed by a 70-year-old woman out of the park.

This is another life-changing Liberare bra, and probably the one I wear the most often (although sometimes its neck-and-neck with the Comfort Sculpt). Again, the magnetic front closure is a dream come true, and the material couldn’t be softer.

I also love the fact that this bra comes with a four-inch perfect fit adjuster – which is handy for me as my weight often fluctuates with my health. This bra has it all, the front closure, the easy-on design, the comfort, and the support.

Choosing the Best Bras for Women Over 70

Honestly, I was all set to fall in love with the bra designed by a 70-year-old woman. But after trying it for myself, I’m not sure of the “designed by a grandmother” claim is true – or just a marketing ploy.

It’s definitely not the worst bra I’ve ever worn, but I personally think Liberare knows a lot more about what older women like me really need from a bra than that viral grandmother. If you’re looking for a bra that’s actually designed for you – one that’s easy to wear, comfortable, and even a little supportive (without wires), my advice is to stick with Liberare.
